TraceGist License
Free to use, including at work and for clients. Not open source. The same text ships as
LICENSE.txt inside every download.
In short: install it on any number of machines and use it for anything lawful, including commercially and inside your organization (IT may deploy it centrally). Don't redistribute it publicly, modify it, or resell it. We claim no rights over anything you record. The MCP bridge and the relay are separate, MIT-licensed components.
TraceGist License
Copyright (c) 2026 Matthias Wulff. All rights reserved.
This license covers the TraceGist browser extension as distributed by the
copyright holder (currently at https://tracegist.com) and its source code,
together "the Software" — with the exceptions listed in section 8. It is a
proprietary license: the Software is free of charge to use, but it is not
open source.
1. What you may do
You are granted a free-of-charge, non-exclusive, non-transferable,
worldwide, perpetual license (subject to section 11) to:
a. install and run the Software on any number of machines;
b. use the Software for any lawful purpose, private or commercial,
including inside a company and in paid work for clients;
c. make copies as needed for backup and for deployment inside your
organization — for example over an internal file share, a software
catalog, an endpoint-management tool, or a Chrome enterprise policy
such as a force-install list, including repackaging the Software for
that purpose without changing its code. An IT service provider may do
this on an organization's behalf. Your organization, including
companies under common control with it, is the licensee; its staff
and contractors use the Software under this license.
You are responsible for export-control and sanctions rules that apply
to you.
2. What you may not do
This license does not allow you to:
a. distribute the Software to the public — for example by offering it
for download to people outside your organization, listing it in an
app store, or including it in another product. Where the Software is
officially distributed is decided by the copyright holder (currently
https://tracegist.com; other channels such as the Chrome Web Store
may be added);
b. modify the Software or create derivative works of it, except as
permitted by section 3 or by mandatory law;
c. sell, rent, lease, or sublicense the Software;
d. remove or alter copyright notices, license texts, or attribution
contained in the Software;
e. misrepresent the origin of the Software or present it as your own.
3. Reverse engineering
Nothing in this license restricts what applicable law permits regardless
of contract terms. In particular, under §§ 69d and 69e of the German
Copyright Act (UrhG) and the corresponding provisions of Directive
2009/24/EC, you may observe, study, and test the functioning of the
Software, and decompile it where required to achieve interoperability
with independently created software, under the conditions those
provisions set out. This includes correcting errors as § 69d(1) UrhG
allows. Unzipping the Software, loading it into Chrome as an unpacked
extension, or applying Chrome's managed settings to it is normal use,
not modification.
4. Ownership
The Software is licensed, not sold. All rights, title, and interest in
the Software remain with the copyright holder. This license grants no
rights to the "TraceGist" name or logo beyond factually referring to
the Software. The copyright holder may transfer this license and the
rights in the Software to a company under the copyright holder's
control or one that takes over the Software; your license continues
unchanged.
5. Feedback
If you send feedback, suggestions, or bug reports, the copyright holder
may use them to improve the Software and related services, without
obligation or payment to you. You keep whatever rights you have in
them.
6. Updates, services, and Chrome
This license gives no right to updates, new versions, or support. The
Software may be changed or discontinued at any time. Versions already
installed remain licensed under the terms that accompanied them.
Security fixes are announced on the update list; see
https://tracegist.com/security.
Online services the copyright holder operates, such as the relay at
relay.tracegist.com, are not part of the Software. They are provided
separately, may have their own terms, and may be limited, changed, or
withdrawn. You can run your own relay and bridge instead (section 8).
Services you connect the Software to yourself, such as OpenRouter or a
bridge run by someone else, are your own arrangement with that
provider.
The Software runs inside Google Chrome, which is Google's product under
Google's terms; Chrome may change in ways the Software cannot follow.
If you obtain the Software through an app store, these terms govern
your use of the Software; the store's terms govern the store.
7. Your data
This license grants the copyright holder no rights to the recordings,
logs, or any other data you capture with the Software. How the Software
handles data is described in the privacy policy at
https://tracegist.com/privacy; by default all captured data stays on
your machine. Session content you choose to send through a relay is
end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by the copyright holder,
whether you use the hosted relay or your own.
8. Components under their own licenses
The following are not covered by this license:
a. everything in the source directories packages/tracegist-mcp-bridge,
packages/tracegist-relay, and apps/relay-worker, and the npm packages
"tracegist-mcp-bridge" and "tracegist-relay" built from them, which
are under the MIT License (see the LICENSE file in each);
b. third-party open-source components bundled with the Software, which
remain under their respective licenses. Their license texts ship
with the Software in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt, and a software bill of
materials is published at https://tracegist.com/sbom.
Nothing in this license restricts you from running your own relay or
bridge.
9. No warranty
The Software is free of charge and is provided AS IS, without any
warranty — including, for the avoidance of doubt, any warranty of
merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
The copyright holder is liable for defects only if the copyright holder
has fraudulently concealed them (§§ 523, 524 BGB). Where the law of your country gives
you rights that cannot be waived by contract, those rights remain.
10. Limitation of liability
Because the Software is free of charge, the copyright holder is liable
only for intent (Vorsatz) and gross negligence (grobe Fahrlässigkeit),
as the statutory rules for gratuitous contracts provide (§§ 521, 599
BGB). This limit does not apply to injury to life, body, or health, to
liability under the German Product Liability Act
(Produkthaftungsgesetz), or to a guarantee the copyright holder has
expressly given. If a court does not treat this license as gratuitous,
then for simple negligence the copyright holder is liable only for
breach of obligations whose fulfilment makes proper performance of
this license possible at all and on which you may regularly rely, and
only up to the damage that is foreseeable and typical for this kind of
contract. Where the law of your country gives you rights that cannot
be waived by contract, those rights remain.
11. Termination
This license ends automatically if you materially breach it and do not
stop the breach within 14 days of becoming aware of it. You may end it
yourself at any time by deleting your copies of the Software. On
termination you must stop using and delete your copies. Your
recordings and exports are yours and are unaffected. In an
organization, only the licensee in breach is affected. Sections 3, 4,
5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13 survive termination.
12. Governing law and venue
This license is governed by the law of the Federal Republic of
Germany, excluding its conflict-of-law rules and the UN Convention on
Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). If you are a
consumer, the mandatory consumer-protection provisions of the country
where you habitually reside remain unaffected. If you are a merchant
(Kaufmann) or a legal entity under public law, the courts of Munich,
Germany have exclusive jurisdiction.
13. Severability
If a provision of this license is invalid, the rest stays in force.
